  1. I'll be honest here...
For me a good teacher is someone who can encourage students into thinking for ourselves, make us PARTICIPATE rather than saying "hey, Tom!!! do exercises 6B, Q5-7, using Pythagoras' theorem and ...". a good teacher cant be boring enough to make his students fall asleep but cant be too cool (or cooler than students) and put the newest songs playing through class and chatting with students so they like you more (two math teachers are almost like that, just not as exaggerated < not saying any names here >...); teachers have to meet a midterm (in between), Mr Lee used to be incredible at that, I say.
A teacher is to inspire, not give work; to orient/guide, not take the student somewhere (give him tools all done), this what the students should do.
So for me what makes a good teacher is inspiration, leadership, enthusiasm and wisdom

  2. I think a good teacher is a person who can find each of their student's strength and weaknesses. Like Ms. Jill gives an example during class that she recommended her student about journalism but the student's parents wanted him to do business, I think Ms. Jill has done the right thing. To be honest, I wouldn't want to obey what my father says me I have to do in the future. Also, because I'm dumb, I can't find my strengths and weaknesses by myself so it would be helpful for a teacher to find them and recommend me something I'm good at so I don't have to struggle when I have the job.

Traditionally, Japanese schools have a style of class that a teacher is at the blackboard telling the students to shut their mouth and constantly making them copy down what they write there onto their notebook. I just hate this style of teaching; if you don't remember it, it's just a waste of time and paper :P I hate how the teachers expect us to do well and they look down at us just because we are younger than them. I think a good teacher is a person who treats us fairly and understands our views of things.

Lastly, i think a teacher who doesn't have contradiction in their action and what they teach will be a good one. There r teachers who pick on students and scold the students they hate and fondle their favourites but they tell us to be nice to our friends and treat them fairly. (I am the hated ones most of the time) I hate that they say we have to do things but they never do it. Another example back in Japan, I had this teacher who scolded me for sleeping during her class but whenI saw her during an assembly, she was sleeping the whole time. After the assembly, she would go to the stage and say "WHY CAN YOU SLEEP DURING AN ASSEMBLY? I AM VERY DISAPPOINTED WITH U ALL." I think those teachers should consider if they believe they have the right to say it before they teach us.

Sorry it became so long :P

    1. Ah yes Misaki I agree! A good teacher should be aware of their students strengths or weaknesses and know if they are struggling. And I also agree that they shouldn't contradict themselves. PS - you are not dumb!

  3. I think there are two kind of good teachers - totally authoritative and totally flexible. To be honest, teachers who are somewhere in the middle are not that great teachers. I can't say which type of teacher is better since it depends on the culture and individuals. For example, Korean parents would prefer an authoritative teachers since they are widely considered as teachers that helps a lot with students' grade with lots of homework and cramming system of education. On the other hand, students in any part of the world would prefer a totally familiar and kind teachers since they are considered as 'less hard-working' teachers. I really can't choose which type is better as they have their own strength and for me it really depends on the situation. I prefer a math teacher and most of academy teachers to be authoritative, since they don't need much talking or creative thinking in the class, but English teacher to be encouraging and makes us participate in the class.
Moreover, giving good advice to students that really helps students in the future is a must have quality of a teacher. Teachers should(?) help students to choose their career pathway, university major since I think teachers know more about students academically than students' parents.
Lastly, teachers are people who can be role models of students. They're behaviors should be alright all time, at least in front of students and parents watching.

    1. I agree with you about teachers giving students advice and encouragement and believe it helps students a great deal - I even have personal experiences of it! However I disagree that teachers cannot be 'good' if they are in between being authoritative and flexible and that maths and science teachers should be authoritative (we may be in disagreement because of culture)

  4. I agree with Pedro in that i think that a good teacher encourages students to think for themselves. A teacher who can get the students engaged and thinking for themselves AND get the students passionate about the topic is always good. Good teachers encourage their students to challenge certain views and who encourage their students to think of both sides of an argument (rather than just what they believe). I do, however, disagree with Pedro where he says that a good teacher can't be too boring or too cool. I think that many good teachers can be either (probably less on the boring side). I think that teachers who are perceived as "cool" by their students are often more likely to get the students interested in the work (although, of course, not all cool teachers are good teachers) but i think it also depends of the subject. As Gibeom(?) said, subjects such as maths and science, where there is less creative thinking involved, an authoritative teacher can be better at being more direct and making things easy to understand and remember. Whereas more controversial subjects, such as english and humanities, a more inspiring teacher can be good. I think a good teach also gets to know their students personally. As Misaki said, she cannot learn well by just copying things down from a board, whereas some students find this easier. a good teacher accommodates for each individual and helps them learn in the best way possible for them. I also think one of the most important traits of a good teacher is that they care about the students and that they really want them to thrive. Teachers who just don't care are no where near as good as those that do.

  5. To be honestly, I agree with parts of what everyone has said so far. My opinion of a 'good' teacher is someone who is passionate, hardworking and is capable of making their students want to succeed in their class. A good teacher must have a fairly high understanding in their area of learning and should either be able to offer their students adequate information on the topic or be willing to find out the information they are not certain about, to then offer it to the student. Whether in or out of class time, I believe a teacher should be able to offer their students’ either advice (regarding both school and personal related issues) or suggest another responsible adult to speak with. Students should ALWAYS feel safe, be treated equally and in my opinion, should not be punished too harshly. I somewhat disagree with Gibeom’s opinion that maths and science teachers should be authoritative, for I think that being flexible and approachable is absolutely necessary to gain the students trust and desire to learn. In saying so however, I do not believe students should be given the permission to do whatever they please. Lastly, I feel that a good teacher should share their wisdom and offer advice, encourage them to think for themselves, prepare them for the future and (prepare for the corniness of this next one) be the adult you needed or looked up to when you were that age.

    1. very thoughtful Indi. I was thinking that you can do a great deal of creative and critical thinking in Math and Science. Mr George used to teach like that and he was a physics/math teacher. But I also agree, Gibeom, that its good to encounter many different KINDS of teachers. Strict teachers can teach you to meet deadlines, be on time, listen very carefully etc. So its not always bad to have authoritarain as long as it doesn't turn into TOTALITARIAN. If students don't feel safe to ask questions for example, how can learning possible happen.

  6. I also agree with you guys, but Lucy.. er, like.. I agree that teachers can be cool as well, BUT, as Tom/Gibeom (cant read Korean) said, a cooler teacher is more liked, because gives less work, teaches less -> students learn less... MEANING teacher is not that good... right?

    1. Are you saying ms Jill isn't cool? ;)
Students can like teachers or think they're cool for other reasons than that they give less work. Or like Gibeom said, "sometimes teachers don't have to teach a lot to be a good teacher"

  7. In my opinion, I think a good teacher is someone who can form strong relationships with their students and show that they care for them, encouraging and resilient. A teacher is there to help students to start thinking independently and develop their own opinions. Just telling them information does not help when they reach the real world and they have to solve a problem themselves, a teacher’s job is to prepare you for the future. I agree with Indi, teachers should be allowed to provide student’s advice relating to both school and personal related issues, thus forming a stronger relationship between the student and teacher. Good teachers encourage their student’s to do their best in any aspect of school let it be a sport they signed up for or an assignment in any subject. Teachers who are able to alter their teaching to suit students are qualified for this job title and be considered adequate.

  8. Pedro, but sometimes teachers don't have to teach a lot to be a good teacher, you know. They can focus on giving very good advice than putting information into students' brain. I think in a school, at least half or more of the teachers should be authoritative and the others should be cool teachers so they can be in harmony.

  9. Honestly, I agree with parts of what you guys have to say. But I'll be honest here (this might be corny for most of you all though hehe).

A teacher teaches you the lesson, guides you and challenges you to challenge yourself. They makes you want to challenge everything. Like they make you to question things, be open minded with things, leaving your comfort spot, makes you interested in learning and more. I think as humans, we invest so much of our time to the things that keeps us interested. That goes the same in our learning. The more interested you are in a topic, the more you want to learn and invest your time on. A good teacher also teaches you how to be independent with your learning, but guides you alone the way.

A good teacher is just someone who is compassionate, respectful, a challenger, a guider and encouraging to the students. Teachers are not in school to make students copy what's on the board and that's it. They need a way to connect with the students. And when a teacher really likes to teach and makes them want to learn more, they are most likely to connect with the students better and understand them better. A teacher who respects the students are the ones who doesn't treat their students lower than them. A good teacher encourages you to do the best of your ability , whether it's your strength of weakness and gives you good advise, not just in that course, but in life.

    1. School/College is like a preparation for responsibilities when we are older and as adults. We have to shuffle our schedule so that we meet our due dates on time, do work in a time limit, balance our budgets so we can pay bills and other stuff like that. A teacher who gives good advise and know what your strengths and weaknesses is a good teacher. Because they are adults, they have more experience than we do.

  10. Good teachers are teachers who can elicit ambition from their students. No matter the way is, whether to make them mad in study or persuade them calmly, seeding an ambition on their students will eventually ends up with students succeeding in future. Teacher who just tells student what to do can't inspire their students, but rather make them disturbed. For example, as the English teacher in dead poets society doing, they can teach their students in totally different ways and make students feel different about them and follow. Anyway, I also agree with Gibeom's argument that the way teacher should teach depends on the subject, but still, if they cannot elicit ambition, students will fail in studying it.
Additionally, they should also have a passion and confidence of what they are doing. If they not, they might not even try to make a consonance with their students and someday even agitated by their own students, which will never help their student's future (students wouldn't make their teachers to make them study).

  12. In my opinion a good teacher is someone who always care for his students. A nice teacher should think about his student the most. Whatever happens which would make him mad should be forgiven with love, and he has to worry about the student's future like a parent. He should be a person who can think of the best way for his students along with encouraging them to achieve their dreams. I think a nice teacher should be able to dedicated themselves to the extent in order to help the students. Additionally, he has to sacrifice himself in order to raise his student into a fine adult.

  13. Wow that's true about the need for teacher's to sacrifice sometimes I think

  14. I totally agreed with what's everyone opinions is. I will gave u my opinions about what is it means to be a good teacher. A good teacher. What's makes a good teacher different from other teachers? Well the For the short terms, A good teacher will not teach their students just based on what the textbooks says but instead, they will show them love, compassion and supports for their students difference Is that a good teacher will never teaches their students by authority, persuade or ect even though the teacher were meant to do what's the best for their students, This will not be consider as a good teacher. Why? a good teacher teaches their students from example and not by authority. A good teachers will encourage their students for what their beliefs and not by telling them what to do.
